Bongani Mahlangu proved once again that age is nothing, but just a number as he successfully made the first defence of his South African junior-featherweight title at the SABC’s Renaissance Centre in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, on Friday evening.

Mahlangu, who dethroned Ayabonga Sonjica with a sixth round stoppage at East London’s Orient Theatre in July last year, stopped challenger Mduduzi Mzimela from Empangeni. The 43-year-old Mahlangu from Boipatong in the Vaal floored Mzimela, 26, with a straight left in the fifth round to retain his title.

Meanwhile, Donjuan van Heerden won the Gauteng middleweight title after he stopped Nelson Mbhele in the first round.
