Cape Town Spurs returned to the top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship standings after they registered a 2-1 win over NB La Masia at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Sunday afternoon.

Following a goalless first half, Spurs took the lead from a spot kick, which was converted by their trusted forward Ashely Cupido in the 73rd minute.

The home side pushed forward searching for an equaliser and they equalised through Mogamad Jappie from a spot kick six minutes before full-time.

And it looked like the match was going to end in a draw until Luvuyo Phewa, who is on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, sent a scorcher into the net just before the referee blew the final whistle.

The Urban Warriors have now collected 56 points with second-placed Casric Stars on 55 and Polokwane City, who are third, on 54. All three clubs are left with one match having played 29 matches.

Meanwhile, Polokwane City defeated Platinum City Rovers 2-0 at the Olen Park Stadium in Potchefstroom and Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Venda Football Academy (VFA) at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in KwaMhlanga.
