Just two months after he dethroned Lusanda Komanisi to become the new South African lightweight champion, Khaya Busakwe is now set to defend his crown against Ayanda Nkosi.
Soweto-born Busakwe is going to make a voluntary defence against Nkosi, who is rated seventh in South Africa, at the Sun City Superbowl, Rustenburg, on Saturday, 27 May.
Busakwe became the new SA lightweight champion after Komanisi dislocated a collar bone during their fight at the Orient Theatre in East London on March. Veteran ring official Siphiwo Mbini, who was the fight referee, counted Komanisi out in the third round.
“I don’t know much about Nkosi except that I still remember his 2019 fight against Thompson (Mokwana). I’m not afraid of him and I believe that I will beat him. He’s got power and I also have power,” Busakwe said.
Busakwe, who celebrated his 33rd birthday last month, has registered nine victories (all stoppages), three defeats and a draw compared to Nkosi’s 15 wins (nine knockouts) and a loss.
The Busakwe-Nkosi fight is in the same Xaba Promotions bill as the vacant IBF International junior-bantamweight title contest between Phumelela ‘The Truth’ Cafu from Duncan Village in East London and Mexican boxer Rosendo Hugo Guarneros Gonzalez.
On the other hand, reigning South African flyweight champion Jackson ‘M3’ Chauke faces Filipino boxer Jayson Vayson in a vacant IBF Intercontinental title contest.
