Cape Town-based World Boxing Federation (WBF) president Howard Goldberg is set to travel to the United States to supervise a fight between unbeaten American boxer Claressa Shields and Hanna Gabriels from Costa Rica next month.
Shields and Gabriels are going to fight for the World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Organisation (WBO) and WBF female middleweight titles at the Little Ceasars Arena in Detroit on Saturday, 3 June (4 June, South African time).
“Claressa Shields is fighting on the third of June in Detroit. I’m going there to supervise for the WBF. I will leave at the end of May. This just shows that the best woman fighter in the world is defending a WBF title as well, proudly so. It’s very likely that she will be in South Africa in either September or October,” Goldberg, a former ring official, said.
The 28-year-old Shields from Michigan in the US is unbeaten in 13 fights having stopped two of her victims. She defeated Savannah Marshall in the United Kingdom in October last year. On the other hand, the 40-year-old Gabriels’ professional record stands at 21 victories (12 knockouts), two defeats and a draw.
