South African boxer Ludumo Lamati is in a stable condition at a hospital in Belfast, Northern Ireland, following his stoppage loss to unbeaten Briton Nick Ball in a World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver featherweight title fight at the SSE Arena on Saturday evening.
The Mdantsane-born boxer collapsed shortly after referee Kevin Parker had stopped the fight in response to his corner having thrown the towel in the 12th round. Straight after that, Lamati was stretchered off the ring and taken to hospital.
“On Saturday 27th May Ludumo Lamati was taken to the Belfast hospital. On arrival, numerous tests and scans were carried out. He is currently under hospital care and the latest feedback from the medical team, this morning, is that his vital signs are stable. We will provide further updates as soon as they become available. Please keep him in your prayers,” a statement from Boxing5 Promotions, who promote Lamati, said on Sunday morning.
The loss to Ball was the 31-year-old former South African and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) junior-featherweight champion’s first career defeat as he dropped to 21 wins, a loss and draw.
