Queensberry Promotions boss Frank Warren has revealed that hospitalised South African boxer and former world champion Ludumo Lamati had a bleeding in his brain.
Lamati was rushed to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, Northern Ireland, after he collapsed in his corner following a 12th round stoppage loss to Englishman Nick Ball in a World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver featherweight title fight at the SSE Arena last Saturday.
“He had a bleed to his brain. He had an operation. He’s apparently very stable. We got a couple of people on the ground over there who are monitoring the situation. We at Queensberry have reached out to get his family over here or some of his family over here so that they can be at his bedside,” Warren, who co-promoted last Saturday’s tournament, told IFL TV on Friday.
Saturday’s defeat by Ball was the 31-year-old Mdantsane-born Lamati’s first loss in 23 fights. His record now reads 21 wins, a defeat and one draw.
Meanwhile, Lamati’s mom Joyce and his girlfriend Chay Chadday are set to travel to Northern Ireland to be on his bedside.
