It’s not always the case that a boxer sings his or her former trainer’s praises after they had decided to go separate ways, but Tshifhiwa ‘Atomic Spider’ Munyai has shown that he’s definitely a different breed of a fighter.
The Makwarela-born former South African lightweight champion has spoken glowingly about his former trainer Alan Toweel whom he left for Warren Hulley this year.
“I had good times under Alan. He’s a good manager and I spent years with him. I fought eight times under him. He’s a good trainer. I left him without having had any problems with him,” Munyai said.
“I left him for Warren because I felt I needed to be in another environment. I wanted another challenge. With Warren, it’s more like I’m with my brother. I don’t have many years left as a boxer thus I moved to Warren about two or three months ago.”
Meanwhile, Munyai has only fought once since he lost his SA lightweight title to Lusanda Komanisi at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park in September last year. Komanisi lost the same title to Khaya Busakwe in East London in March.
The 38-year-old Munyai stopped Malawian boxer Crispin Moliati at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex in Seshego, Polokwane, in December last year.
