Utility back and speed merchant Aphiwe Dyantyi has been thrown a lifeline after Durban-based rugby franchise, Sharks, announced him as their new player on Tuesday.

Dyantyi, formerly with the Lions in Johannesburg, returns to big time rugby after serving a four-year ban for using banned substances. His ban ends in August this year. He was found guilty of using metandienone, methyltestosterone and LGD-4033, which are all banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

“More than anything, I’m just excited to be back and I trust everyone who is around is excited as I am to see what I can do. I only promise to do my best for the jersey. I’ve been in Durban for quite some time now and I’ve kind of seen what the Sharks mean to the people, I want to contribute to that,” Dyantyi said.

The 28-year-old Dyantyi, who was born in Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape, played 13 times for the Springboks before his ban.
