Months of inactivity are going to come to an end when national champion Zolisa Batyi finally steps inside the ring to defend his South African featherweight title next month.
Friday, 21 July, is the day when Batyi will clash against Abdul-Aziz Kunert to defend the title he won after he stopped former champion Jeff Magagane in the second round at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex in Seshego, Polokwane, in December last year.
“Finally, I’m going to fight again. I’m going to defend my title against Kunert in Johannesburg next month,” Batyi from Nxarhuni confirmed.
This is going to be the second time that Cape Town-born Kunert, who is rated number one in South Africa, attempts to win the national featherweight title.
Kunert failed in his first attempt when he lost to then champion Asanda Gingqi in Johannesburg in September 2021. Gingqi, who is now trained by Miniyakhe Sityata and Mnyamezeli Shosha, was dethroned by Magagane in September last year.
