After initially struggling to get fights since moving abroad about five years ago, things are finally coming together for South African boxer David Rajuili, who is now based in Germany.
To prove that there has been a positive turn of fortunes, Rajuili is going to fight for the third time in three months as he is due to face off against unbeaten German boxer Hamsat Shadalov at Eisstadion, Heilbronn, in Germany next Saturday.
“It’s crazy, I’m out here with no sponsors. Getting these fights has really been a blessing. For the past years I was just training and training. Last year we went to the Netherlands where I lost by a split decision in a six rounds fight. The outcome of the fight motivated me to keep going,” Rajuili said.
Last year’s fight against Dutchman Bryan Nisia in the Netherlands seemed to be what the doctor ordered as Rajuili has gotten three more fights since then.
“In April this year I fought against Djiby Diagne and I defeated him. After that I got a call to go fight in France against a good competitor Jaouad Belmehdi. They expected him to knock me out, but I gave him a tough fight before losing to him. A few days later, I got a call to go fight here in Germany under one of the biggest promoters. My opponent Shadalov represented Germany at the Tokyo Olympics. It’s not always the case that one gets to fight against an Olympian,” Rajuili revealed.
With Shadalov having won all his five fights, Rajuili said that it will be foolhardy for the fight organisers to think that they are going to use him as the German boxer’s springboard.
“I’m a South African fighter here in Europe. I will always be the away fighter as they want to get their boxer a better ranking. These battles are what we are born for. They must really, really be careful if they want to use me as his springboard. I feel I will be in my best shape. It’s gonna be a very big challenge for him. I’m gonna mess up their plans. I want to make my mark in the German boxing scene. This is a big opportunity for me,” Rajuili said ahead of his fight against Russia-born Shadalov.
