Former world champion Ludumo Lamati has recovered and is finally coming back home after he spent more than a month at a Belfast, Northern Ireland, hospital following his loss to Englishman Nick Ball in May.
Lamati was rushed to hospital after he collapsed in his corner following a 12th round stoppage loss to Ball during a World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver featherweight title contest at the SSE Arena in Belfast. That was the 31-year-old Mdantsane boxer’s first loss in 23 fights.
“I’m coming home this week. I can’t wait to be home after being in hospital this long. I’m grateful to everyone who prayed for my recovery,” Lamati said.
The former South African and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) junior-featherweight champion has revealed that he would have been discharged earlier had it not been for a book which is being written about his recovery.
“The people here are writing a book about what I experienced and what to do in case of an injury like the one I had. They are going to publish the book. Going forward they are going to have two surgeons at tournaments. The surgeons are going to make sure that they are in contact with the nearest hospital while attending a tournament,” Lamati revealed.
