Italy needed a last-minute goal to ease past Argentina 1-0 in a 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Group G match at Eden Park, Auckland, in New Zealand on Monday.
Cristiana Girelli’s 87th minute header off Lisa Boattin’s cross from the left-wing gave the Italians a much-needed win. Girelli had only been on the field for four minutes when he scored for the Italians after she had substituted Giulina Dragooni.
The Italians now have a date with Sweden in Wellington in their second group stages match on Saturday while the Argentines face Banyana Banyana a day before. The Swedes came from behind to defeat Banyana 2-1 on Sunday.
