Banyana Banyana squandered a two-goal lead and drew 2-2 with Argentina in a 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Group G clash at the Dunedin Stadium in New Zealand on Friday.
Banyana broke the deadlock on the half hour mark after Thembi Kgatlana laid the ball for Linda Motlhalo to beat Argentine goalkeeper Vanina Correa to score the South Africans’ second goal of the tournament.
Two minutes into the second half, Motlhalo had an opportunity to double Banyana’s lead, but she shot wide. Kgatlana, however, made amends in the 66th minute when she found the back of the net following a Jermaine Seoposenwe pass.
The South Americans went forward in search of an equaliser and they cut the deficit after Sophia Braun beat Banyana goalkeeper Kaylin Swart in the 74th minute.
Five minutes later, Argentina equalised through a glancing header from second half substitute Romina Nunez, who had replaced Daiana Falfan.
The outcome of this encounter has left both Banyana and Argentina still searching for their first Women’s World Cup victory.
