Banyana Banyana made history when they advanced to the knockout stages of the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time after they defeated Italy 3-2 in a Group G match at the Wellington Regional Stadium in New Zealand on Wednesday. Wellington.

Banyana were given a lifeline after Italy defender Benedetta Orsi’s back pass beat Le Azzurre goalkeeper Francesca Durante in the 32nd minute. Coach Desiree Ellis’ teamp took the lead when Hildah Magaia beat Durante with a low shot in the 67th minute following a pass from Thembi Kgatlana.
Le Azzurre’s Caruso completed her brace when she equalised after the Banyana defence had failed to clear a corner in the 74th minute.
Kgatlana, who wore the captain’s armband, scored Banyana’s winning goal after she received a pass from Magaia following a move by Jermaine Seoposenwe in referee’s added time.
