Japan overcame Norway 3-1 in a 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup last-16 encounter at the Melbourne Regional Stadium in Australia on Saturday.

Things started to go wrong for the Norwegians after Ingrid Engen failed in her effort to clear Hinata Miyazawa’s cross and scored an own goal giving the Japanese the lead.

Six minutes later, Guto Reiten jumped high to head home past Japan goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita to equalise from Vilde Boe Risa cross.

Risa Shimizu restored the 2011 world champions’ lead in the 50th minute and Miyazawa made it 3-1 nine minutes from full-time
