England survived a scare before they beat the Nigerian Super Falcons 4-2 on penalties in a 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup last-16 encounter at the Brisbane Stadium in Australia on Monday.
This match was decided on spot kicks after the sides failed to score in 120 minutes of football.
England converted four penalties through Bethany England, Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood and Chloe Kelly with Georgia Stanway missing her spot kick.
On the other hand, Rasheeda Ajibade and Christy Ucheibe converted for the Super Falcons while Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie missed.
Meanwhile, England finished the match with 10 players after their star player Lauren James was red carded in the 85th minute. Match referee Melissa Borjas sent James off after she stamped on Nigerian playef Alozie’s backside.
