Boxing South Africa (BSA) is mourning following the death of national bantamweight title holder Ronald ‘King’ Malindi, who passed away on Saturday after spending more than a month in hospital.

Malindi was admitted at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg after a shooting incident in Westbury last month.

“It is with deep sadness that Boxing South Africa mourns the loss of Ronald Malindi, a true South African bantamweight champion with an unblemished record of 19 professional fights without a single loss,” a BSA statement said on Sunday.

“He stood just one victory away from securing sole possession of the South African bantamweight belt. Our hearts are heavy as we bid farewell to this remarkable boxer, who departed us on October 7, 2023.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to this family, friends and the entire community. Ronald’s legacy in the ring will forever be remembered and he will be dearly missed. We encourage the boxing community to keep the Malindi family in their prayers as they navigate this challenging period.”

Malindi was due to have fought against Lusizo Manzana at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in East London three months ago. However, the fight never took place because of a disagreement between his trainer Sean Smith and Rumble Africa Promotions (RAP).
