Making South African boxing history will be the motivating factor as Yonelisa Poni, who is originally from Cacadu in the Eastern Cape, collides with Thobela Nyanda later this month.
Poni will be vying for the vacant South African female mini-flyweight crown when she fights against Nyanda in a rematch at the Wells Estate Multipurpose Hall in Gqeberha on Saturday, 28 October.
The 23-year-old Cape Town-based Poni will be out to become the first female boxer from Cacadu to win a South African title.
“We fought earlier this year and she defeated me. I made a couple of mistakes during that fight thus I lost it. I’m going to correct my mistakes and win this time around,” Poni said.
Meanwhile, Nyanda from Mdantsane scored a second round technical knockout victory over Poni when they met at the Ncumisa Kondlo Hall in Peddie in February this year.
Nyanda was a nominee in the Female Prospect of the Year category at the South African Boxing Awards in June. Monalisa Takane from Kirkwood walked away with the award.
