Capetonian Wasim Chellan maintained his unbeaten record after he defeated Malawian boxer Denis Mwale by a split decision at the Goodwood Correctional Centre in Cape Town on Friday evening.
Judges Clifford Mbelu and Sipho Ndongeni’s score cards read 96-93 and 97-92 respectively for Chellan while Rachel Kanko had Mwale winning by 96-93.
As a result of the win, the 27-year-old Chellan annexed the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) International welterweight title.
Following Friday’s win over Mwale, Chellan has now improved his professional record to eight victories while his Lilongwe-born opponent dropped to nine wins and six defeats.
Meanwhile, Thembani Mbangatha won the vacant Western Cape junior-lightweight title after he outpointed Bulelani Ngondeka in the main supporting bout.
