Ilunga Makabu’s attempt to reclaim the World Boxing Council (WBC) cruiserweight title failed as he lost to Noel Mikaelyan at the Casino Miami Jai Alai in the United States early on Sunday morning (South African time).

Armenian Mikaelyan stopped Makabu from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the third round to claim the vacant WBC title. Referee Gene del Bianco from the US waved off the fight after Makabu was floored.

The 35-year-old Makabu, who is trained by Damian Durandt in Johannesburg, was trying to reclaim the title he lost to Badou Jack from Sweden in February this year.
