Members of parliament’s portfolio committee on sport, arts and culture should be involved in interviewing candidates, who vie for positions in the board of Boxing South Africa (BSA).

This call was made by Democratic Alliance member of parliament Tsepo Mhlongo during the BSA board’s appearance before parliament’s portfolio committee on sport, arts and culture on Friday.

According to Mhlongo, members of the portfolio committee have not been given an opportunity to be part of the panel to check the candidates’ fitness for positions in the BSA board.

“We must review the appointment of the minister, that we must be involved as we did with the PANSALB. We must be given an opportunity as parliamentarians to interview, to engage, to exercise our oversight to the appointment of the minister,” the vocal Mhlongo said.

While BSA board chairperson Luthando Jack begged for continuity on Friday, Mhlongo, who grilled the regulator’s board members, was totally against recycling.

“We turn to recycle members for years. We cannot recycle members of the board of BSA. They are bringing now back old members again to come back, there’s no difference,” Mhlongo said.

Jack, Gilberto Martins and Khulile Radu served in the previous board, which was led by Doctor Peter Ngatane. And Sakhiwe Sodo, the BSA sanctioning committee chairperson, is not new in the board as he served before.
