An embarrassing situation has broken out in South African football after it was announced that elite League side Moroka Swallows won’t honour their matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Lamontville Golden Arrows.
The Dube Birds were due to clash against log-leading Brazilians at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria at 19h30 on Wednesday. Swallows were also scheduled to play against Abafana Bes’thende at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto this coming Saturday.
“The Premier Soccer League has been officially notified today that Moroka Swallows Football Club is unable to fulfil its scheduled DStv Premiership fixtures against Mamelodi Sundowns on 27 December 2023, and Lamontville Golden Arrows on 30 December 2023. The League extends its sincere apologies to all stakeholders, including clubs, partners, media and spectators, for this unfortunate situation,” a PSL statement said on Wednesday.
Non-payment of players’ salaries by the club resulted in a stand-off, which led to the cancellation of the two matches.
