One of the most experienced ring officials South Africa has produced, Edward ‘Eddie’ Marshall, passed away on Friday morning after being ill for more than two years. He was 68.
The sad news of the former boxer’s passing away was announced by World Boxing Federation (WBF) president Howard Goldberg on Friday morning.
“The WBF head of Africa Eddie Marshall passed away this morning after battling an illness over the past two years. Eddie was an incredible man, knowledgeable, wise, generous, kind and one of the most loyal men I have ever met,” Goldberg said in a statement.
Cape Town-based Goldberg, a former referee and judge, also revealed that Marshall had been involved in the fistic sport for more than 50 years.
“His contribution to boxing spanned over five decades. He was an outstanding referee and judge who officiated in over 100 world title fights. Eddie was a community man always giving to those in need. But to me, personally, Eddie was a friend and brother,” Goldberg said.
“We spoke virtually every day until he was unable to communicate due to his illness. Eddie and I shared so many memorable adventures over the past 30 odd years. But most of all, Eddie was respected worldwide. Everyone admired and respected Eddie for who he was. The WBF conveys its condolences to Eddie’s family for their huge loss. Eddie is now at peace. Never to be forgotten.”
