Cape Verde stunned Ghana with a 2-1 win in an Africa Cup of Nations Group B match at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Sunday evening.
Cape Verde opened the scoring when Jamiro Monteiro tapped into an open goal after Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Ofori had parried the ball into his path in the 18th minute.
Ashimeru Majeed thought he had equalised for the Black Stars in the 36th minute. His goal was disallowed after match referee Jean-Jacques Ngambo Ndala consulted VAR which confirmed that Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar Dias was unsighted as a result of Jordan Ayew being in front of him.
The Black Stars finally got the equaliser when their France-born defender Alaxander Djiku netted 11 minutes into the second half. That was his second goal in a Black Stars shirt.
Just as football fans thought the match would end in a draw, Cape Verde substitute Garry Rodrigues scored the Blue Sharks’ winning goal in referee’s added time.
