The Stallions of Burkina Faso made Africa Cup of Nations history when they beat Mauritania 1-0 in their opening match, which was played at Stade de la Paix de Bouake in Ivory Coast on Tuesday evening.
Substitute Bertrand Traore scored the all-important goal from the penalty spot in referee’s added time. The Burkinabes were awarded the penalty after Lions of Chinguetti defender Nouh El Abo had fouled Issa Kabore inside the box.
This was the Burkinabes’ first ever win in an opening match of the AFCON tournament. They had failed to win opening matches on 11 occasions.
