Having spent more than five years in the junior-bantamweight division, Duncan Village boxer Yanga ‘Showtime’ Sigqibo has now decided to move up to the bantamweight.

Sigqibo, who is a former South African junior-bantamweight champion, said that he’s looking at having more competition in the new division.

“I have decided to move up to the bantamweight division after spending more than seven years fighting in the junior-bantamweight. For the record, I  have never struggled with weight. The thing is that there is more competition in the bantamweight division,” Sigqibo said.

The 29-year-old Sigqibo is not even worried about losing his rating in the World Boxing Council (WBC) now that he has changed divisions. Currently, the WBC rates Sigqibo in 12th spot in the junior-bantamweight division.

“Yes, I agree that the move might affect my rating by the WBC. But we need to remember that one win will take me back to the ratings,” Sigqibo remarked.

Sigqibo, who is trained by Thembani ‘Best’ Gopheni, last fought when he defeated Namibian boxer Jonas Matheus at Vodaworld, Midrand, in September.
