History was made on Sunday morning (South African time) when Dricus du Plessis became the first UFC world champion fom South Africa.
This followed after Du Plessis defeated American Sean Strickland by a split decision to claim the UFC middleweight title at the Scotiabank Arena in Ontario, Canada.
A very close fight it was, the 30-year-old Du Plessis would be happy to have emerged victorious from the clash. Du Plessis from Pretoria improved his record to 22 wins and two defeats.
