Bafana Bafana’s dream to reach their first ever Africa Cup of Nations final in 26 years failed after they were beaten 4-2 on penalties by the Nigerian Super Eagles at Stade la Paix in Bouake, Ivory Coast, on Wednesday evening.
This semi-final encounter was decided on penalties after Bafana and the Super Eagles played to a 1-1 draw in two hours of football.
After holding the Super Eagles to a goalless draw in the first half, Bafana gave away a penalty following Mothobi Mvala’s foul on Victor Osimhen. Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong made no mistake from the penalty spot as he beat Bafana goalkeeper and skipper Ronwen Williams in the 67th minute.
Midfield workhorse Teboho Mokoena equalised for Bafana from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after a foul on Al Ahly star Percy Tau.
Coach Hugo Broos’ boys were reduced to 10 men after their defender Grant Kekana was red card following a professional foul on substitute Terem Igobor Moffi in the 116th minute.
