Coach Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana are going to return home with a bronze medal after they finished in third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast.
This followed after Bafana beat the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 6-5 on penalties at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, early on Sunday morning (South African time).
The third place play-off was decided on spot kicks after Bafana and the Leopards played to a goalless draw in regulation time.
This was the first time in more than two decades that Bafana had a podium finish at an AFCON tournament. Bafana’s last AFCON medal was a bronze at the Ghana/Nigeria tournament 24 years ago.
