Ivory Coast became the first hosts to win the Africa Cup of Nations trophy since Egypt 2006 as they came from behind to beat Nigeria 2-1 in the final played at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe on Sunday evening.
Super Eagles took the lead after their captain William Troost-Ekong broke the deadlock when he rose high and headed past Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana seven minutes before the half-time break.
It took the Elephants more than an hour before they managed to find the back of the net through Franck Kessiè, who beat Super Eagles goalminder Stanley Nwabali with a header from the far post in the 62nd minute.
The Elephants went in front for the first time during the match after Sébastien Haller beat Nwabali to make 2-1 nine minutes before full-time. The goal gave the Elephants their third AFCON trophy having been champions in 1992 ans 2015.
Meanwhile, the final was broadcast in 173 territories globally, making it by far the most watched match in the history of the AFCON tournament.
