If all goes well, the inactivity of former national champion Phila Mpontshane will finally come to an end as he’s set to get some boxing action, two years after he last laced his gloves.
The former South African junior-lightweight champion has a planned fight against Tanzanian boxer Abeid Zugo, real name is Abeid Kessy Kasongo, in Tanzania pending the signing of a contract.
This is going to be the first time Mdantsane-born Mpontshane fights since he lost his SA junior-lightweight title to Sibusiso Zingange in February 2022.
The loss robbed Mpontshane of an opportunity to register a win or a draw and then get an outright ownership of the SA junior-lightweight championship belt having made four successful defences before he met Zingange.
According to Mpontshane’s trainer Amanda ‘Jahman’ Magatya, they are yet to receive a contract for the fight against Zugo.
The Tanzanian defeated erstwhile World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) bantamweight champion Simphiwe ‘V12’ Vetyeka on points in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, last December.
Meanwhile, Mpontshane has a professional record of 15 victories (six knockouts) and three losses while Zugo has won all his 14 fights with 12 of those wins coming from stoppages.
