Former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou, from Cameroon passed away on Friday. He was 77.
Hayatou, who was born in Garoua, Cameroon, was the longest serving CAF president having taken office in 1988 and left the position in 2017 and was succeeded by Ahmad Ahmad from Madagascar.
Between 1974 and 1988, Hayatou was secretary-general, vice-president and president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT). He went on to become CAF vice-president in 1986 and then assumed the position of president two years later.
The Cameroonian became a member of the FIFA executive committee in 1990 and later became vice-president in 1992. Hayatou was involved in athletics, basketball and football. He excelled in both the 400 and 800 metres where he became a national champion between 1964 and 1971.
