It looks like nothing will please the National Professional Boxing Promoters Association (NPBPA) more than seeing Boxing South Africa (BSA) Mandla Ntlanganiso joining the already swelling ranks of the unemployed as it is threatening to go to court if Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, does not revoke national treasury’s concurrence in Ntlanganiso’s appointment.
Minister of Sport, Zizi Kodwa, appointed Ntlanganiso to the top job last month something which has never set well with the NPBPA as it’s plainly spelt out in the letter it sent to Godongwana through its lawyers Mafani & Company Incorporated.
In the letter to Godongwana, the NPBPA, through Mafani & Company Incorporated, asked: “Is national treasury indeed in concurrence with the appointment of Mr Ntlanganiso as the accounting authority for Boxing SA? Is it also the national treasury’s interpretation of the Boxing Act that if Mr Ntlanganiso is properly appointed as the accounting authority for Boxing SA, which our client denies that he is, then he by virtue of such appointment also possesses the powers, as conferred by him by the Minister, to sanction events and/or boxing tournaments?”
In the letter, the NPBPA demanded that Godongwana revoke Ntlanganiso’s appointment and then send his letter of revocation to Kodwa.
And ready to fight until the bitter end, the NPBPA has scheduled a press conference, which is going to be held at the Southern Sun in Sandton at 11am on Thursday.
Topping the list of topics to be addressed by the NPBPA is Ntlanganiso’s recent appointment, status of the NPBPA’s court case against Kodwa’s appointment and installation of the now interdicted new BSA board, sparring graduation and licensing and the sanctioning of tournaments.
Meanwhile, the NPBPA has also written to acting BSA director of operations Mncedisi Ngqumba questioning the sanctioning of Sinazo Makawula-Moroke’s tournament, which was held at the Mitta Sperepere International Convention Centre in Kimberley late last month.
The NPBPA argued that Makawula-Moroke’s tournament was not properly sanctioned. The NPBPA further argued that BSA staff members who worked at the tournament were in contravention of the Boxing Act.
Interestingly, the NPBPA seems not to have a problem with the Lightning Boxing Promotion’s tournament, which was held at the KwaMashu Indoor Sport Centre on Sunday, 25 February. The association also has no problem with Ola GMM tournament held at Scenery Park Hall in East London last Saturday.
