Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu believes that he did enough to win his fight against Argentine boxer Yamil Alberto Peralta Jara at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban in the early hours of Saturday morning.

However, score cards from two judges – Eddie Pappoe from Ghana and Argentine Jose Cordini told a different story as they had Peralta winning by 97-93 and 96-94 respectively. Only South African judge Ishmael Koali had Mchunu winning by 97-93.

As a result of the split decision victory, the lanky 32-year-old Argentine won the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver cruiserweight title.

“I fought against an awkward fighter. He’s a good boxer, he’s awakward. I feel I did enough to get the decision,” the 36-year-old Mchunu said.

This was Mchunu’s first fight since he lost to Ilunga Junior Makabu from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in a WBC cruiserweight title contest in January 2022.
