Argentine boxer Yamil Alberto Peralta Jara silenced South African boxing lovers when he beat favourite Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Peralta defeated Mchunu by a split decision as judges Eddie Pappoe from Ghana and Argentine Jose Cordini had him winning by 97-93 and 96-94 respectively. South African judge Ishmael Koali had Mchunu winning by 97-93.

And as a result of the split decision victory, the lanky Argentine won the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver cruiserweight title.

And it has to be said that the two boxers’ sluggish performance didn’t suggest that anyone of them fancied himself as the next possible challenger for the WBC title.

Meanwhile, Thulani Mbenge shook off the ring rust and scored a unanimous points decision win over another Argentine boxer Leandro Ariel Fonseca in the main supporting bout.
