Amateur star Simnikiwe Bongco’s boxing career has taken a new leaf as the Duncan Village-born boxer has ditched his vest and turned professional.

This was confirmed by both Bongco and his trainer Mzamo ‘Chief’ Njekanye on Tuesday afternoon.

The 22-year-old Bongco, who amassed a number of medals in the amateur ranks, has revealed that he is going to campaign in the welterweight division.

“It’s about time that I turn professional as I have been in the amateurs since 2007. I’m quite happy about ny decision,” Bongco said.

“Amateur boxing helped change my life a bit here and there. I’m now looking forward to fighting as a professional boxer. My amateur achievements speak for themselves, but one has to bear in mind that professional boxing is on another level.”

Meanwhile, Njekanye is quite happy that Bongco has decided to turn professional without being influenced by anyone.

“He decided on his own that he was gonna turn professional this year without anyone influencing his decision. I believe this is the right time for him to turn professional,” Njekanye said.
