Any boxer who wishes to fight against current South African featherweight champion Zolisa Batyi will have to wait until he finishes his business with Yamkela Phaliso.
This is what Batyi’s trainer Khangelani Jack said as there are boxers who are calling out his boxer to a fight. Batyi is going to make a voluntary defence when he meets Phaliso on Saturday, 27 July in East London.
Batyi from Eluxolweni in Nxarhuni stopped Lucky Hobyane in the eighth round in his second defence of the SA title at the Orient Theatre in East London last Sunday.
“We are going to fight against Phaliso if he doesn’t run way from us. We should have fought against him, but he pulled out saying he was injured,” Jack, who won the 2023 Trainer of the Year award at the South African Boxing Awards, said.
Meanwhile, Mtuseni Dube, who trains World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental featherweight champion Lindelani Sibisi, called out Batyi on Thursday.
Sibisi is fresh from a first round win over Tanzanian Iddy Kayumba in Estcourt last Saturday. And Dube believes that the 25-year-old Sibisi, who has six wins with five stoppages and two losses, can easily dethrone Batyi.
“Sibisi must wait, his time will come. We are definitely not afraid of him. He will have to come to the Eastern Cape because he’s the one who wants our title,” Jack remarked.
