Jackie Brice has described a fight between Thembani ‘Baby Jake’ Mbangatha and Abdul-Aziz Kunert as a bout that the Cape Town boxing community has been yearning for for quite some time thus he has decided to pit them against each other.
Saturday, 29 June, is the day Brice of Jackie Brice Boxing Promotions has pencilled for a showdown between the two boxers, who were unsuccessful when they challenged for South African titles.
“The long-awaited fight between Baby Jake and Kunert is going to come off on the 29th of June. It’s gonna be at junior-light. Cape Town has waited two years for this fight,” Brice announced.
“I think both of them are at the crossroad of their careers. Still rated, but they fought for the SA title and lost. It’s all about bragging rights, who’s the best in Cape Town.”
Cape Town-based Mbangatha from Qumbu in the Eastern Cape challenged for the SA junior-lightweight title in December last year and lost to Asanda Gingqi in East London.
On the other hand, Kunert challenged for the SA featherweight crown twice and failed to win it on both occasions. He lost to Gingqi in September 2021 and drew with current champion Zolisa Batyi in August last year. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
