Lanky fifth-rated Sinethemba Blom has lodged a challenge to clash against reigning South African lightweight champion Khaya Busakwe.
Blom’s trainer and manager Lonki Witbooi told Ink Sport that a number of factors contributed to their decision to challenge Busakwe.
That Kaine Fourie, who’s number one in the ratings, clashes against third rated Siseko Makeleni in a vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Continental Africa lightweight in Johannesburg next month made Witbooi’s decision easy.
“I have been following the movements in the lightweight division. On Saturday, I sent a letter to Boxing South Africa enquiring about the status of the South African title whether the champion was on his mandatory or voluntary window,” Witbooi said.
“Boxing South Africa responded on Monday saying that the champion was on a mandatory defence period. There were developments with Kaine fighting number three in Makeleni with Katlego Khanyisa having gone down to another division.
“Ayanda Nkosi, who’s rated number four above Blom, lost his fight against the champion. That left Blom as the mandatory challenger. I then sent a challenge form to Boxing South Africa on behalf of Blom.”
Blom’s last fight was a stoppage win over Lubabalo Bukuvu at Tsolo Junction Hall, Qumbu, in December. On the other hand, Busakwe defeated Cape Town boxer Shameeg Williams in December last year. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
