Jorge Garcia Perez silenced the partisan crowd at the Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park as he stopped favourite Roarke Knapp in the third round on Saturday evening.
As a result of the win, the Mexican became the new International Boxing Organisation (IBO) junior-middleweight champion.
Perez shocked Knapp, who had him in trouble with nice combinations towards the end of the second round. Perez only survived when the bell rang signalling the end of the round.
The Mexican started the third round with more aggression and decked Knapp. Fight referee Deon Dwarte waved off as he ended the proceedings.
Meanwhile, Shervantaigh Koopman won the vacant IBO Intercontinental junior-middleweight title after he outpointed Wendy Toussaint in the main supporting bout.
All three judges Dwarte (98-92), Zambian John Shipanuka 96-94 and Patrick Mukandiwa (97-93) from Zimbabwe gave the lad from Germiston the nod.
