A swelling on Mzuvukile ‘Old Bones’ Magwaza’s left leg has put paid to his chances of challenging current South African junior-featherweight champion Bongani ‘Wonderboy’ Mahlangu.
Duncan Village-born Magwaza was scheduled to challenge Mahlangu at a David Faas Productions tournament at the OR Tambo Hall in Site C, Khayelitsha, on Saturday, 27 July.
“The fight is not happening. You know that he got shot and that leg is giving him troubles at the moment and is unable to train because of it,” Magwaza’s trainer Michael Mouneimne revealed.
“He hasn’t trained since last month. He needs some time to recover and will get back to training once he gets better. However, I don’t know how long he’s gonna be out.
“He might be out for three to four weeks depending on whether the swelling comes down or not. It’s quite bad. Hopefully, he will have a speedy recovery and fight some time later this year.”
Magwaza was shot in the leg by thugs who robbed his Site C home in Khayelitsha early in 2018. He recovered and returned to action with an impressive second round stoppage win over Sanele Maduna in April 2022.
After that, Magwaza registered his first professional loss after he was beaten by Sabelo Ngebiyana. He then atoned for that defeat with a win over Nasiphi Mdlangazi.
Magwaza, however, lost to Mexican boxer Bryan Mercado Vasquez in Mexico in October last year. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
