The almost forgotten man of South African boxing and erstwhile world champion Gideon ‘Hardcore’ Buthelezi from the Vaal is returning to action two years since he last laced his gloves.
Buthelezi is billed to collide against Tinashe Mahashe in a World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental junior-bantamweight title clash at the OR Tambo Hall in Site C, Khayelitsha, in Cape Town on Saturday, 27 July.
The former IBO minimumweight and junior-bantamweight champion has not fought since he suffered a first round stoppage loss to Filipino boxer Dave Apolinario in July 2022. The two boxers were fighting for the vacant IBO flyweight title.
“I’m fighting next month. It’s good that I will be fighting again. It’s been a long time since I had my last fight. I really can’t wait to get into the ring,” Buthelezi, who is trained by Sandile Mahlangu, said.
Buthelezi said that he would like to follow in the footsteps of his Boipatong homeboy Bongani ‘Wonderboy’ Mahlangu, who is still active despite approaching his 45th birthday. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
