Olympic silver medallist and high school learner Bayanda Walaza is happy to be back home after he took part at the Paris Olympics in France.
The 18-year-old learner returned home with a silver medal after the South African 4x100m relay team finished in second place.
“I’m happy to be back. There’s no place like home. I went back home to my mother’s house because I missed them and I also want to eat home food in pap and stew,” Walaza said during an interview on Radio 2000’s Game On show on Tuesday evening.
“It was nice being in Paris, but the food was not that nice. It had no seasoning. It’s not like at home. But I killed the ice cream. To be honest, because I’m so young, I thought I was on vacation and wouldn’t run.”
The Sterkspruit-born Walaza added: “I met so many stars in the Olympic village. It was so nice. Some of the biggest stars I met were Kenny Bednarek and Andre de Grasse. It was amazing .But now I run against them, so they must also know us.”
Walaza landed at the OR Tambo International Airport from France on Tuesday morning and fellow learners from Curro Hazeldean High School came to welcome him back home.
“When we got back today, I knew that my school would be there at the airport. I was very excited. But I didn’t get to see them or talk to them because I was told I needed to go to the boardroom for a meeting and press conference. But I’m going to school tomorrow, so I’ll see them,” he said.
