The first tournament of the Rise of Women Boxing Series 2, which was scheduled for Friday, 30 August, in Ladysmith has been postponed as announced by Boxing South Africa (BSA) on Thursday afternoon.

The show, which was going to be promoted by Nomfundo Malinga’s Sugarboy Boxing Promotions, got postponed after her failure to fulfil BSA’s obligatory and regulatory requirements.

“BSA has decided to postpone the planned Women’s Month boxing tournament, which was awarded to a promoter in KwaZulu-Natal. The initial event was scheduled on Friday, 30th August 2024. A new date and venue for the event will be confirmed in due course,” a BSA statement said.

BSA board member and Women in Boxing committee chairlady Nande Mheshe said: “This difficult decision was made due to non-compliance issues by the appointed boxing promoter. Ensuring that all regulations and standards are met is paramount to safety and integrity of our events, and unfortunately, these conditions were not fulfilled.

“The board has made it clear that no exceptions will be made in relation to non-compliance and adherence to the highest level of governance. We will now start working towards the next date made. In the meantime, the matter must be referred to the competent structures of BSA for appropriate action and a way forward.”

Commenting on the matter, BSA board chairperson Sifiso Shongwe said: “We are committed to promoting women in boxing and supporting the Women in Boxing committee initiative. However, we will continue to insist on the highest standards for all those who want to be part of this journey going forward. The message is clear – the days of poorly organised events that do not respect the regulations and governance of BSA are over
