Former junior-welterweight boxer and boxing enthusiast Phumzile ‘Gamala’ Dubase from Mdantsane passed away early on Sunday morning after he lost a two-year battle against cancer. He was 56.
Dubase ditched his vest and joined the professional ranks in 1986 where he spent eight years as a paid boxer. He won nine fights with five of those wins coming from stoppages, lost 10 and drew twice.
“My brother passed away earlier this morning (Sunday) after a two-year fight against cancer. He’d been on and off,” Dubase’s younger brother Phumlani Dubase confirmed.
Upon retiring from professional boxing, Dubase concentrated on working for the Department of Health as a paramedic.
