Departed former professional boxer Phumzile ‘Gamala’ Dubase, who passed away early on Sunday morning, is going to be laid to rest on Saturday, 31 August.

The details of the date of the funeral were revealed by Phumlani Dubase, who’s the deceased’s younger brother.

Dubase, a former junior-welterweight boxer and a knowledgeable boxing enthusiast, passed away after he lost a two-year battle against cancer. He was 56.

“The family has decided that the funeral is going to be held on Saturday, 31st August,” Phumlani Dubase, who also revealed that a memorial service is set for the Mdantsane Indoor Sport Centre next Thursday, confirmed.

Dubase joined the professional ranks in 1986 and spent eight years as a paid boxer. Dubase chalked up nine victories with five of those wins coming from knockouts, lost 10 and drew twice.

And following his retirement from professional boxing, Dubase concentrated on working for the Department of Health as a paramedic.
