Producing the first female boxer from the Western Cape to win a South African title remains one of the proudest moments for leading Cape Town boxing promoter Jackie Brice from Jackie Brice Boxing Promotions (JBBP).
Brice-promoted Ntombokuqala Tolashe won the vacant South African female featherweight title after she defeated former SA junior-featherweight champion Matshidiso Mokatsane from Kroonstad, Free State, at the Vibrant Sport Centre in Ottery, Cape Town.
“I made history here in Cape Town on Friday. We had Tolashe becoming the first female ever from the Western Cape to win the featherweight title. That’s a very impressive record to have,” Brice remarked.
Before facing Mokatsane, Tolashe made two attempts to win the SA female junior-lightweight crown. She was, however, beaten by Nozipho Bell on both occasions in July 2021 and October 2022.
Meanwhile, Brice, who was a nominee in the Promoter of the Year category at the 2023 South African Boxing Awards, is going to have his fifth tournament since June when he stages another show later this month.
Khayelitsha-based Lwando Mgabi, originally from Duncan Village in East London, clashes against Komani-born Sihle Jelwana in a vacant SA junior-bantamweight title contest with Simamkele Tutsheni challenging national female junior-featherweight champion Nomusa Ngema.
“We’ve got two South African title fights on the 27th of September. Lwando Mgabi versus Jelwana, Tutsheni versus Ngema. I’m breaking records. That’s all I worry about, to make champions,” Brice said.
“I don’t receive a cent from any government. I’m gonna make these champions and prove to people that we can do it without government funding.” – Monwabisi Jimlongo
