Most people who converged at The Station in Durban expected Phikelelani ‘Stinger’ Khumalo to win his fight against Faustin Bukasa from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Saturday evening.

And Khumalo, a former footballer, didn’t disappoint as he registered a third round technical knockout victory over Bukasa to have the African Boxing Union (ABU) SADC middleweight belt strapped around his waist.

Even though the fight didn’t go the distance, the win didn’t come that easy for Khumalo who dusted himself up after Bukasa had decked him in the first round. In winning the fight, Khumalo became the third boxer to inflict defeat on Bukasa.

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal champion Mnelisi Ndlovu won the vacant ABU SADC bantamweight title after he stopped Arnel Lubisi from Mpumalanga in the fourth round and Ntethelelo Magcaba knocked out Andile Mafeka in the third round to become the new ABU SADC junior-bantamweight titlist.
