Kaizer Chiefs won their first opening match in five seasons as they beat Marumo Gallants 2-1 at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday evening.

Christopher Sithole’s attempt deflected off Chief defender Inacio Miguel and beat Amakhosi goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari eight minutes into the match.

It took Amakhosi nine minutes to equalise through Mduduzi Shabalala, who lobbed the ball over Gallants goalminder Washington Arubi.

Amakhosi led for the first time when second half substitute Mfundo Vilakazi beat Gallants goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, who had replaced an injured Arubi, in the 79th minute.
