After chalking up yet another win last Friday, unbeaten boxer Lwando Mgabi has made it clear that winning the South African junior-bantamweight title is just the beginning of good things to come.
Mgabi, who has won all his seven fights with two of those wins coming from stoppages, defeated Sihle Jelwana from Komani to claim the vacant SA junior-bantamweight title at the Sunningdale Sports Centre in Milnerton, Cape Town.
The title became vacant after Phumelela Cafu relinquished it when he got an opportunity to challenge reigning World Boxing Organisation (WBO) junior-bantamweight champion Kosei Tanaka in Tokyo, Japan, on Monday, 14 October.
“I’m very happy to have won the title. Being a South African champion is a dream come true for me,” Mgabi remarked.
The 23-year-old Mgabi, who is originally from boxing mad Duncan Village in East London, is now looking at continuing notching up more wins.
“I’m gonna fight for the IBF Africa title now. However, no date has been set. The fight might take place in November or December. Actually, I was supposed to have fought for the IBF Africa title before becoming an SA champion,” Mgabi concluded. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
